Summary
The Hiltons is a sweeping saga of the success--and excess--of an iconic American family. At the center of the story is Conrad Hilton, the enigmatic and demanding patriarch whose visionary ideas and unyielding will established the model for the modern luxury hotel industry. His international chain included the Waldorf-Astoria and the Plaza in New York; The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles; The Nile Hilton in Cairo; and the Hilton Hotel in Rome, among dozens of others. Hilton had an unmatched business acumen that anticipated lucrative trends like the post-war travel boom and the emerging importance of credit cards. But outside the boardroom, Conrad struggled; he often felt at odds with his own devout Catholicism, and his emotional detachment led to failed marriages and strained relationships with his children. His eldest son and presumptive heir to the Hilton empire, Nicky Hilton, tried to dedicate himself to his work as a company vice president, but his tragic alcoholism and marriage to Elizabeth Taylor soon became the stuff of tabloid legend. Younger brother Barron, on the other hand, was as steady as Nicky was unstable, building on his father's legacy and carrying the Hilton brand triumphantly into the new millennium. There is also Eric, who was raised apart from his older brothers and accepted his supporting role in the Hilton dynasty with calm resignation, in stark contrast to their much younger half-sister Francesca, whose battle for recognition led to conflict and courtroom drama. And then, of course, there is Paris, the highly visible great-granddaughter of Conrad who has managed to parlay her famous surname into a fortune worth at least $50 million. The rest of the cast includes the inimitable Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was once married to Conrad and remained a thorn in his side for decades, and a host of other Hollywood and business luminaries with whom the Hiltons crossed paths and swords over the years. Exhaustively researched and grippingly narrated, The Hiltons is an epic chronicle of a legendary American dynasty
