Summary
In Oxford, Sofia, an Italian restorer of fabrics is mourning the loss of her husband, Nicola Obreskov, a historian. In Paris, the wealthy collector Edmund Payne wins an eighteenth-century hot air balloon, handed down for generations by the Laffay family. Payne devoted himself exclusively to the idea of setting up a museum of flight, of which the hot air balloon should be the most important piece. But the silk of the ball, torn in several places, must be restored, which brings him to Sofia. Sofia would like to publish her husband's writings and for this she will accept Edmund's offer of mutual aid: in doing so, she will first work to mend the rips of the hot air balloon and then go in search of the adventurous story of Xavier de Maistre, the builder of the balloon. Sofia comes out of her cocoon, changes perspective and begins to get passionate, reconstructing the events of a forgotten man, going to Chambéry, the birthplace of de Maistre, an ancient town, made up of intertwining alleys and gates that hide squares. And here she meets Pauline Chabod, tenacious owner of an antiquarian bookshop, marked by the fragmentation of her family
